When it comes to buying gifts, many people find they have great difficulties in finding an ideal gift. Whether it is for a wedding, birthday or for Christmas, many people either spend days searching for that "special something" or simply go for the first thing they lay eyes on.

This is a shame for both parties.

From your point of view there is nothing worse than handing over a present you're not proud of. There is a pleasure in giving gifts which can only be experienced when you are giving someone something you know they will love. To see their eyes light up when they see what you have bought them is a joy everyone should experience.

Of course by not getting them something special you don't feel that. In contrast, you feel guilty about what you have chosen them.

From their point of view of course, receiving the perfect gift means genuine excitement at opening something they truly love, and also avoids all the difficulties of them politely pretending they love what you bought.

So how to select the perfect gift for someone?

There are two main keys that will stand you in good stead.

The first key is in getting to know that person well - either directly or indirectly (such as by speaking to friends and relatives of theirs). This means spending time with them where you can communicate.

If you only ever see them at work and are too busy to chat then finding out about them will be understandably difficult. In contrast, if you spend your lunchtimes together, or go out for coffee on the weekend together for a chat they will soon start dropping hints and giving you ideas without even realizing it.

The second key is to really listen to that person - to understand them deeply as a person. Be in the present with them and really take the time to focus on what they are saying. Don't let the conversation wash over you, but instead concentrate to pick up the tiny hints they will constantly drop without meaning to.

You see the truth is that people unknowingly drop tips about what they'd like all the time - if only you're there to hear them and you take note.

They may point out an item of clothing they love, or mention an old record they used to love but can't find any more.

Perhaps there is a place they'd love to go to, or something they'd love to see.

Maybe there is a food they love, or a picture they love.

Keep logging those ideas in your mind and when it actually is time to buy them a gift you will overrun with ideas and the problem will be selecting the best from your extensive list, rather than now knowing where to start!

The real beauty though isn't just giving them a gift they will love, and doing it without too much trouble, but something rather deeper.

You see, anyone can spend a load of money. The truth is that the old saying "it's the thought that counts" has survived so long simply because it is so true.

The person whom you are buying for will realize that you really *listened* to them and remembered what they would like. That doesn't go unnoticed and makes the gift so much more valued because you showed you really pay attention to them. And people love to feel important.
